• Middle or High School — 15 to 18 L.Enough for an A4 binder, several notebooks, a pencil case, a snack, a bottle, and a small laptop or tablet.
• Full-day High School, BTS, IUT (vocational/technical degrees) — 20 L.The ideal size. Accommodates a laptop up to 16", two A4 binders, a pencil case, calculator, notebooks, water bottle, and charger.
• University, Prep School, Graduate School — 20 to 25 L.For days with mandatory laptops, handouts, large water bottles, and sometimes sports gear. Ideal for busy and long days.
• Beyond 25 L.You're looking at a weekend-sized bag. Too large for daily use: the bag deforms and weighs more empty than it's worth.

If in doubt between two sizes, go for the smaller one. A bag that's too large always ends up getting heavier with unnecessary items carried "just in case."

For middle school, opt for a backpack with ergonomic padded straps rather than a handbag: the average load of school supplies often exceeds 5-6 kg, and asymmetrical carrying over time can cause back problems during growth spurts. Capacity 15 to 20 L.

• For high school, the choice broadens. Girls often switch to handbags or tote bags for style, while boys predominantly stick to backpacks.Ideal rectangular shape for binders and notebooks.
• In BTS, IUT, and university, a laptop becomes almost essential. Choose a school bag with a dedicated and padded laptop compartment, not a large tote bag where the PC would bump against other items. Check the supported diagonal (13", 15", or 16" depending on your machine).
• For engineering school, medical school, or prep school, consider aspacious format with a capacity of 20 to 25 L: lecture notes, notebooks, codes, water bottle, snacks — the days are longer and more fragmented.

Here is a typical list for a full study day, validated by our client feedback:

Daily Essentials: laptop and charger, complete pencil case (black, blue, red, green pens, highlighters, eraser, white-out, scissors), planner, water bottle (500 ml minimum), earphones, phone, keys, student card, and travel pass.

Depending on the day's classes: relevant binders or notebooks (never the entire arsenal, that's what makes it heavy), calculator if for math, physics, or economics tutorials, photocopies for the day, required books.

Comfort and Unexpected Needs: personal pouch (tissues, lip balm, band-aids, personal medication if needed), a cereal bar or fruit, power bank, a small sweater or shawl (lecture halls are often cold), foldable umbrella depending on the weather.

To Avoid: carrying all binders for the week, multiple "just in case" books, more than one liter of water. A well-packed school bag rarely weighs more than 4 kg when loaded.

Four criteria to consider in order:

1. Usable capacity (in liters or internal dimensions), not the commercially advertised capacity. A poorly designed "30 L" bag may hold less than a well-structured "20 L" one.
2. PC compatibility if you carry one. Check the supported diagonal (a 16" MacBook Pro is 35.8 cm wide) and the presence of a separate padded compartment.
3. Material. For daily school year use, opt for Oxford polyester or ballistic nylon — tightly woven, water-repellent, easy-care fabrics. Avoid low-end faux leather that cracks at the fold within 12 to 18 months.
4. Carrying comfort. Long handles for carrying by hand or on the shoulder, and ideally the option to add a removable shoulder strap for long journeys. A bag over 4 kg carried on one shoulder guarantees back pain.

The indicative price of a bag that lasts a full school year without deforming: between €50 and €100. Below €30, expect to replace it during the year.

The principle: a fixed place for each type of item, defined once and for all and always respected.

• Main compartment: laptop, binders, notebooks — bulky items, laid flat against the back to distribute weight evenly.
• Zipped inner pocket: ID, student card, tickets, keys — essentials you never want to lose.
• Open inner pockets: pencil case, calculator, headphones — items you grab five times a day.
• Side exterior pocket: water bottle, umbrella — long items that might get wet.
• Front exterior pocket: phone, travel pass, tissues — quick access without opening the bag.

Tip: If your bag has fewer pockets than this, add an internal organizing pouch (€10 to €15) to compartmentalize a large open space.

A school bag that weighs more than 10% of body weight on a daily basis will eventually cause back and neck pain. Here's how to lighten it without sacrificing anything:

• Sort through it every evening: remove binders and notebooks that won't be used the next day according to your schedule.
• Digitize what can be: take notes on a PC or tablet for classes where it's allowed, scan handouts onto your phone.
• Use soft binders or folders instead of rigid ring binders that weigh 400g empty.
• Limit your water bottle to 500ml on a standard day — you can refill it at the school's water fountains.

Choose a lightweight empty bag: a good school bag weighs 400 to 600g empty. If it's over a kilo empty, you're carrying weight for no reason.

For Oxford, nylon, or polyester fabrics: wipe with a damp sponge and a mild soap(Marseille soap, diluted dish soap), rinse with a clean sponge, and air dry flat. Never machine wash or tumble dry— heat and agitation destroy structural seams and water-repellent coatings.

• For faux leather (PU): use only a soft, slightly damp cloth. Avoid alcohol-based cleaners or harsh detergents, as they will cause the coating to peel.
• Daily maintenance: empty your bag once a week to remove crumbs, papers, and dust that accumulate at the bottom and damage the seams.

In case of rain: allow to air dry open, never on a radiator or in direct sunlight (heat melts water-repellent coatings).

Well-maintained, an average quality school bag will last 2 to 3 full school years.

Several levels depending on your budget and desire:

• Easy level (€5 to €15): add pins, iron-on patches, a signature keyring, a plush bag charm. This is the most visible trend in 2025-2026 and can be removed without damaging the bag.
• Intermediate level (€10 to €30): replace the shoulder strap with a colorful or patterned handle (wide, embroidered, braided leather). This completely transforms the bag's silhouette.
• More committed level: specific fabric paint (Pébéo Setacolor, Marabu Textil) to draw or write on the bag. Test it first on a hidden area — some water-repellent coatings do not adhere to paint.

To avoid: permanent markers like Sharpie on water-repellent fabric (they bleed at the first shower) and decorative tape (it leaves glue and tears the fabric).
